Copyright 1929
Hardbound in very good condition with dust jacket, 161 pages includes a FOREWORD, Table of CONTENTS, List of ILLUSTRATIONS and an INDEX, measures approximately 5 ¼" x 7 ½".
The jacket displays one of the hand colored illustrations on the front. It is age toned with heavy chipping to the upper edge and spine but price still intact on the spine, .50 in 1929 and a number of other "OUTDOOR BOOKS" by this publisher are listed on the rear panel. It has been placed in an Archival Quality clear Mylar jacket cover. This book is rarely seen in its dust jacket, that displays one of the featured color plates, so this is greatly worth protecting from sun and wear.
The boards are dark blue cloth with gold titles printed on the spine and cover. They are clean and straight with a bump to the front upper free corner and moderate wear to the corners and ends of the spine.
The interior is clean and tight with hinges completely intact. There is age toning consistent to the date of publication but no foxing and no previous owner names, notations, marks, creases or tears.
OUR FAMILIAR ISLAND TREES was written by Ms. Mary Dillingham Frear, a member of the Dillingham family of Hawaii and wife of one of the Territory's first Govenors, William Francis Frear. Ms. Frear was also a member of the Outdoor Circle of Honolulu, a civic group organized early in the century for the sole purpose of beautifying the city of Honolulu. This book was sponsored by the circle in an effort to furnish
"both resident and stranger a simple guide to the familiar trees, shrubs and vines about us."
Organized by family groups, there are a number of small b/w photos included plus a frontis piece and two additional full color plates. Needless to say, this book preceded color photography so those illustrations that are colored were first photographed in b/w, then the color was applied by hand.
OUR FAMILIAR ISLAND TREES is one of the early botanical classics of Hawaii. A charming little book that gives some background to much of the vegetation we tend to take for granted, the forerunner for many that followed and a very nice piece to include in an Island library.
